RED STICK - 2000

2000 PMCC Convention, August 10-13, Baton Rouge, Louisiana

Baton Rouge, French for "red stick," is the name given our city by explorers who happened upon a red pole rising out of the bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River. It is believed the pole served as a boundary between neighboring Indian Tribes who lived along the river.

PMCC Member Jeff Truax and his family (Natalie and Joshua) did a great job in planning and hosting the 2000 Convention. Over one-hundred members and guests enjoyed meeting and making friends. On Saturday a bus tour went to the Old State Capital, the New State Capital, the Campus of Louisiana State University, and the Baton Rouge Area. The Friday night Ice Cream Social went to the Marble Slab Creamery who opened specially for our group inspite of an watermain break that closed the surronding area! The Museum Auction earned over $4000, and Billie Stone and Dave Proulx battled over a basket of cajun food and treats.

Baton Rouge, the capital of Louisiana, is situated along the Mississippi River. In addition to being a major deep-water port, Baton Rouge is home to Louisiana State University and Southern University, and numerous beautiful ante-bellum plantation homes along the Mississippi River.

Old State Capitol

Among the most popular attractions are the numerous ante-bellum plantation homes along the Mississippi River. Nottoway Plantation in White Castle, Louisiana is a 20-minute drive down the west bank of the Mississippi River. Nottoway was completed in 1859 and is the largest plantation home in the South. Magnolia Mound, built in 1791, is only a few miles south of Downtown and is the oldest building in the city. New Orleans is a short 60-mile drive away, and many of you may want to include a stay in the Crescent City in your convention plans.

For any questions please send e-mail to Jeff Truax.
