Kelvin agreed to accompany her - if he could collect postmarks along the way. During the day, while Ann walked the trail, Kelvin zigzagged his way across 16 states and two Canadian provinces, stopping at more than 1,800 post offices and collecting 3,178 different postal cancellations. With only a few exceptions, they met at a designated place each evening.
